Several major problems have kept synthetic seeds from being used commercially. Excessive cost, excessive weight, lack of singulation, poor flowability, short storage life, and variability among mature plants have been some of the problems encountered by the developers of synthetic seeds. Current research is focusing on developing synthetic seeds that are desiccation tolerant that can be handled like natural seeds. It is likely that it will be at least several years before synthetic seeds are available commercially.
