Float beds are a new technology for growing transplants in the US. Seeds are sown in polystyrene trays and floated on a bed of either water or nutrient solution. A modified system called ebb-and-flood periodically drains the solution from the bed to control water availability to the plant. Plants should be "hardened" prior to transplanting by with holding water to reduce transplant shock.
