F-1 hybrid cultivars of squash and pumpkins are produced by crossing two inbred parent lines. The parents are planted in a ratio of one row male pollinator to 6 rows of female parent. Squash and pumpkins are monoecious which means they have separate male and female flowers on the same plant. To prevent self pollination, female parent rows are sprayed with ethylene releasing chemicals causing all the flowers on the female parent lines to be female. The pollen is transferred from male flowers to female flowers by bees. The hybrid seed is harvested from the rows of the female parent. This picture was taken in Solano County California.
